
Joel Goldhar
Joel Goldhar is a professor of technology management at the Stuart Graduate School of Business at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He teaches Business Policy and Strategy, Operations and Technology Management, Industrial Marketing and the Management of Technology and Innovation.
Joel is also an adjunct professor of small business management at The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. The son of small business owners, he is an enthusiastic advocate of entrepreneurs and those who own their own business. He has particular expertise in working with organizations going through the rapid growth stage of the business life cycle. Specifically, Joel actively counsels clients in the following areas:
- Creating actionable strategic plans
- Designing organizational structures that support successful strategy implementation
- Developing viable new products that meet customer needs
- Improving operational effectiveness
- Identifying and implementing cost-effective technology solutions
He is also the former Dean of the Stuart School of Business and is widely credited with shifting its focus to technology and significantly raising its visibility and improving its reputation. Prior to serving as Dean of the Stuart School of Business, he was the Executive Director of the Manufacturing Studies Board of the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences where he was responsible for the planning, organization and direction of a variety of studies and advisory activities for governmental agencies.
Joel is a nationally recognized authority on flexible manufacturing, computer-integrated operations and the strategic management of technology. A prolific author, recent articles he has authored or co-authored include, “Variety is Free: Manufacturing in the 21st Century,” “Marketing Implications of Newer Manufacturing Technologies,” and Manufacturing as a Service Business.”
Joel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a MBA from Harvard Business School. He also earned a Doctor of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. In addition, he is currently a member of the Technology, Innovation and Manufacturing Management Council of the American Management Association and he serves on the editorial boards of several research publications.
